ויהי ר״ל וגם בביתו לא היה טרוד בצרכי העם כי קם ממשכבו לעת הערב וכבר אמרו חז״ל (בירושלמי פ״ק דברכות ובמדרש) כשהיה דוד סועד סעודת עצמו היה ישן עד תשע שעות וכשהיה סועד סעודת מלכים היה ישן עד הערב, וא״כ סעד אז סעודת מלכים ומתענג בתענוגים, וגם אחר כך לא עסק בצרכי צבור רק הלך לטייל על גג בית המלך – ובזה בא לידי עבירה שראה אשה רחצת – ולא עצם עיניו מראות ברע, הגם שראה מעל הגג – באופן שהוצרך לכוון לראות
And even in his own home, he was not preoccupied with the needs of the people, for he rose from his bed at evening, and the Sages have already said (Yerushalmi, P.K., Debarchot, and in the Midrash) that when David was dining at his own feast, he would sleep until nine hours, and when he was dining at a royal feast, he would sleep until evening. And so he dined at a royal feast and enjoyed himself in pleasures, and even after that, he did not concern himself with the needs of the people, but went for a walk on the roof of the king's house - and in this he committed a sin by seeing a woman bathing - and his own eyes did not see evil, although he saw from the roof - in such a way that he had to direct his gaze to see.
